Team Gombe Qualifies for three Team Events at Northeast Zonal Elimination Ahead of National Youth Games
The Northeast Zonal Elimination for the 9th National Youth Games, scheduled to be held in Asaba, Delta State, from August 26 to September 6, concluded on Monday, with Team Gombe securing qualification in three team events.
The event, which took place from August 15 to 19 at the Pantami Stadium, brought together athletes under the age of fifteen from across five Northeastern states: Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, and Yobe, who competed for slots in various team sports.
Team Gombe impressed in Volleyball (Female) and Cricket (Female), by booking their place to represent the zone at the National Youth Games in Asaba. Team Gombe's female volleyball team finished as runners-up behind Team Borno, while the state’s female cricket team clinched the top spot, edging out other competitors.
Team Gombe also showed strength in Cricket (Male), where they finished second behind Adamawa, and in Rugby (Male), where they showed resilience but were edged to second place finished by Team Bauchi.
The overall zonal eliminations saw Adamawa and Bauchi dominate the podium across most events. Adamawa excelled in Basketball (Male), Handball (both Male and Female), Football (Male), and Cricket (Male), while Bauchi shone in Volleyball (Male), Basketball (Female), Beach Volleyball (Male), and Abula. Yobe equally made strong statements by winning both male and female Hockey.
With the zonal elimination now concluded, attention will shift to Asaba, where Team Gombe will aim to participate in both team and individual events.
